In the presence of Rita Charon, is a physician and literary scholar, the founder of narrative medicine. She is a founding professor of the Department of Humanities and Medical Ethics, as well as a professor of medicine, at Columbia University. She received her M.D. from Harvard in 1978 and her Ph.D. in English literature from Columbia in 1999, focusing on narratology and the work of Henry James.
